First, check out the “thank you” gifts for those who donated to Haiti relief:

I made 13 of these little guys. Making so many of one thing is rough – you get it down to a science so you can do them quickly, but eventually you just do not want to make another one.

Now, on to the birds…

For anyone just starting out with amigirumi, I’d definitely recommend starting with a simple bird pattern (for anyone wondering – yes, I WILL get the amigurumi tutorial up at some point. Promise.)  I started with this one from Bitter Sweet.  Here’s the very first amigurumi I made:

Her name is Chicken.

Next was a going away bird that I forgot to take pictures of named Conrad (Bye Bye Birdie….get it??)

Then came this handsome guy, Patrickswayze Michaeljackson who now lives on my friend Beth’s desk at work.  I fiddled with the original pattern a little, changed the wing shape.

Beth’s coworker was so charmed by Patrickswayze Michaeljackson that she asked if I could make a whole bunch of birds (what do you call a group of birds? flock?) for her to give out as Christmas gifts.

Beth told me that Ps Mj needed a lovebird, so along came Farrahfawcet.

These birds are now my go-to small gifts.  They’re quick to make and are super cute.  Friends have suggested making some as cat toys by adding catnip. These birds are available in pretty much any color/color combination imaginable and are $5 plus shipping (usually about $3).

A few months ago I saw this book with a pattern for a mobile.  I decided to make it for my niece (who was just born on January 18! Welcome, Anona! I’ll teach you to crochet one day!).

The mobile called for a different type of bird:

And the finished product:
It’s difficult to take a picture of a mobile!

I then got a special request for an owl. Made a few modifications to the bird pattern and came up with this:

Hoot Hoot!
